Hoisting the sales on our better shipping rates
Part 3 in our Shipping Series
Over the past month, we've been re-evaluating our shipping policies, which of course includes re-evaluating our shipping rates. One of the biggest customer concerns is the expense of shipping. We know it's important. We feel it deeply. You have choices, and some of them involve membership shipping (read: Amazon Prime). You make a decision to buy direct, and we appreciate that a lot.
Shipping has never been a profit center for us.
We consider it a pass-through expense.
If you've been with us for a while, you know that we are really enthusiastic about transparency. Part of the value we provide as a company, in my opinion, is the insights we can give you about what it's like to be a small manufacturing business. To the best of our ability, we want to share this story with you, and we really appreciate that you're interested.
Recently, we uncovered a way to save about $2 per package on Priority Mail packages (using what's called "cubic rates"). We implemented this right away and the shipping on the site has reflected that savings.
Earlier this year, we were able to whittle down our First Class postage calculations. They had been calculating based on heavier packaging, which sometimes bumped up the weight into Priority, when the package could have been First Class.
In addition, lighter packing materials often means lower shipping prices. So we've been trying to reduce the weight of our packing materials, while still protecting the products.
