Countdown to Christmas: Day 16 - Using all the brain cells, with varying degrees of success

HOO boy. This week has been one of the most intense of my career. I'm in Orlando right now, waiting to get on the airplane that will take me to LA for Renegade Craft Fair. I've been at a conference for Mozilla employees, contractors, and contributors. In addition to having this here fancy soap business with my husband, I also manage social media for the Mozilla Developer Network and the View Source Conference. Meanwhile, our business absolutely BLEW UP from the minute Russ dropped me off at the airport. Seriously, it was insane. That Yahoo article propelled us into a great month of sales.

Countdown to Christmas: Day 18 - Yahoo! happened and everything is insane. Hooray!

WELL, we figured out what happened, thanks to Dawn Josephine in Bozeman (who carries our soaps, I might add) who sent us the link to this Yahoo story on foodie gifts. And how THAT happened, is that our friend and customer Cindy Emch (who is also a very talented musician) works at Yahoo and sent the item to Yahoo Food... they decided to pick it up and VOILA -- not only are we totally out of Bacon Soap, but we've also completely worn Russ down to the ground (sorry honey)....

Countdown to Christmas: Day 20 - Leaving for a week. Yes, really.

Mozilla, the makers of Firefox web browser among other things, is one of the early stage funders of Outlaw Soaps. I don't mean that they are buying shares in the company or anything, but the last several months (some of them quite lean) have been subsidized by my freelance job with Mozilla Developer Network. It's really fun work and the company is absolutely fantastic. I'm beyond thrilled to have the opportunity to work for such a great organization and also receive compensation for that. I used to work in tech and really miss the sense of humor and purpose-driven big thinking that are the hallmarks of that industry. (that's me giving a talk on customer-driven innovation for the View Source conference in Portland last month)

OK. THIS IS WHAT I WASN'T GOING TO TELL YOU ABOUT, BUT THEN RUSS POSTED ABOUT IT ON FACEBOOK, SO I GUESS THE BAG IS JUST FLOATING AROUND AND THE CAT IS NOWHERE TO BE FOUND.

What The Disney Store Taught Me About Retail

Few people know this, but I worked at The Disney Store for three years when I was in my early 20s. (I was even awarded Employee of the Month a couple times!) My primary job (as with almost every Disney Store employee) was to greet and entertain customers of all types, from infant to elderly, and of nearly every culture (or at least every culture visiting the Westlake Center Mall). We were called "cast members" and our job was to put on a show... a retail show! Every customer was our friend who we were just trying to help, always respecting boundaries, never pressuring, and always happy -- eager, even -- to look for a size or specific item.

Renegade Craft Fair SF Wrap-Up

For the third day in 35 days, I missed a blog entry Sunday, Monday, and yesterday. It’s ok. I earned it. Friday morning, we showed up at the Fort Mason Center and did a whirlwind bang-up job of getting our booth together. We arrived at 9 and Russ had to leave for a handyman gig at 10:30, so we had to HUSTLE.

Road to Renegade, Part 2: Treasure Island Flea

HOORAY! Check this out: That's the mural I painted and talked about in the previous "Road to Renegade" post. Russ (seated) made a structure that was curved and without overhead structure, so the light could fall on the mural evenly, and the appearance of a panorama could be better achieved.

The Road to Renegade, Part 1

"19 Days To Renegade LA" is what my mirror says in erasable ink. Every day, we march a little closer to The Big Weekend. What is "Renegade LA"? It's my shorthand for the Renegade Craft Fair, Los Angeles. It's the first in two back-to-back weekends of MAJOR craft fairs, starting July 11.
