Natural Deodorant: the rigorous testing of this high-stakes product

People often ask us to make various products, and we are a highly democratic company, so we often entertain these requests. One such oft-requested products is deodorant. If you remember from my previous post on How to make body wash in one million easy steps, the first step is researching market viability. In the case of both body was and deodorant, the volume of requests is enough to establish market viability. The second step is where we always get stuck with deodorant: the ingredients and process to create handmade deodorant (natural or not) is complicated. The packaging and ingredients are expensive. When we do the cost evaluation, we end up with a product that would cost about $25 for one stick of deodorant. At that point, the market viability drops off. Not many people would like to buy deodorant at $25/item, even if it is amazing stuff.

Lust in the Dust: the soap we loved so much we refused to let it die

Being in Joshua Tree makes me feel most alive. The Outlaw Soaps logo (you know, with the joshua tree, the girl, and the dog) is actually just a slightly edited picture of a tattoo I have on my right arm. I got the tattoo over a couple years as I realized that Joshua Tree is where my heart lives, no matter where I physically am. When I was working in Los Angeles, I'd often drive out to the high desert to hang out with friends, camp, and enjoy the particular open feeling of the sun rising.

Hair of the Dog Whiskey Soap: The soap that almost killed us

From the beginning of our company, we knew we wanted to create whiskey soap. There were very few whiskey soaps in the world, and the whiskey soaps that existed smelled more like vanilla or butterscotch. We knew that straight-up whiskey was going to frighten people away, but if we could get a blend of whiskey and something kind of sweet and soothing, we'd be making something really special. But it wasn't so easy. In fact, the first batch of whiskey soap turned out so badly I wrote a blog post about it. And that blog post was so popular that I wrote yet another blog post about our failed whiskey soap. And after the "Oppenheimer of Soap" incident, you might think we would give up trying to make whiskey soap, but no.

Fire in the Hole explosively awesome campfire soap: Inspired by friends, whiskey, explosions, and good times

The first attempt at making Fire in the Hole soap came on a weekend in May. I know this very specifically, because I wasn't camping that weekend, and it was our annual May Trip. We had planned on going camping with friends -- one of those crazy weekends of drinking and shooting and lighting things on fire -- but it was our first year of Outlaw Soaps, and small business ownership being what it is, we couldn't see to drag ourselves away for the day-long drive to meet our friends in an obscure corner of the Mojave.

How to make body wash in one million easy steps!

We recently announced that we're making Outlaw Soaps Body Wash. The crowdfunding campaigns were so successful that The Gambler Body Wash was 174% funded and Blazing Saddles Body Wash (the sexiest body wash ever) was 182% funded. That's fantastic news, and we're really excited, because new product development is an absolute bear. And not a teddy bear, either. It's more like we're Jedediah Smith vs a bear on the trail. New Product Developments: On the horizon of the Outlaw landscape

One of the fun parts of our jobs is inventing. But due to the nature of our business (outlined at the bottom of this post), we can't do a whole lot of it. Spring, though, is time for us to order a whole messa new supplies and start inventing with great fervor, since whatever we invent in the Spring, we're stuck with for the rest of the year. And if we don't invent something in the Spring, we don't get to start inventing it at any other time, since it's too close to Christmas (yes, really).
