Why Campfire Soap?

When we meet people outside of Outlaw circles, sometimes people ask us what we do. From years of experience, I have learned that "My husband and I have a small handmade soap company," is the un-catalyst for an interesting conversation. Probably second to "I'm a professional quilter," people just do...

Fire in the Hole explosively awesome campfire soap: Inspired by friends, whiskey, explosions, and good times

The first attempt at making Fire in the Hole soap came on a weekend in May. I know this very specifically, because I wasn't camping that weekend, and it was our annual May Trip. We had planned on going camping with friends -- one of those crazy weekends of drinking and shooting and lighting things on fire -- but it was our first year of Outlaw Soaps, and small business ownership being what it is, we couldn't see to drag ourselves away for the day-long drive to meet our friends in an obscure corner of the Mojave.

Desert Camping Adventure (mostly pictures)

For many years, my friends and I went camping to a desert in Northern Nevada on a moderately regular basis. This year, however, we're shaking off our soap shavings and heading out to the same desert with a couple of our friends. Because these aren't your neighbor's travel slides, I figured I'd share them with you. Hopefully you'll enjoy them...

"Fire in the Hole" Story #2: Bees

My friends and I had gone on a camping trip to a dry lakebed just north of Ludlow, California. We had all arrived after sundown, with most of us arriving throughout the night. We had come here many times before, and it was a gloriously undisturbed place where we were free to do whatever stupid stuff we wanted to. As usual, we brought firewood for a massive fire and many of us were enthusiastically throwing propane canisters and gas cans (yes, really) on the fire. More fire is better, right? We were drinking beer, and maybe some scotch, as is our way. There was definitely a drunk front moving through the camp that night, with periodic showers of...

"Fire in the Hole" Story #1: Hell or High Water

This is the first in a series of stories about the inspirations behind our soaps. Many camping stories have contributed to the scent profile of Fire in the Hole, our campfire soap, and this is one. We hope you enjoy these as much as you enjoy the soap inspired by them. “NO ONE WANTS TO GO CAMPING ANYMORE. YOU ARE ALL PUSSIES.”

Well, this is kind of awkward...

You know how sometimes you might have an idea, and then someone says, “hey, that’s not right. You should do it this other way,” and you’re all “nah. that’s not the way I think things should go,” but then after a few weeks, you start thinking that maybe their idea...
