Hope your saddle's on tight, 'cause this is going to be a wild ride!
People talk about the paralysis that people feel when they're getting ready to make a big change -- the fear that strikes before people take the big leap. It comes in a lot of forms, like analysis paralysis, fear of failure, fear of success, fear of ridicule, perfectionism... the list goes on forever.
The idea is that once you get past that first hump - the paralysis - the fun begins and you're on the roller coaster. Right?
I'm here to tell you that there's always more to be afraid of.
The past month has been terrifying... if you've been following our story, you know that one of the main catalysts for the business was the desire to get ourselves out of the city and into the woods.
Well, I am happy to tell you we are literally in the woods.
We've done it. We realized the big dream. We signed the leases, put the money down, set up shop, and are now making soap in our little town.
Well, in addition to literally being in the woods, I am now figuratively in the woods.
Here we are. And now I am terrified.
I'm terrified of everything from whether people in this town will like me to whether we'll be financially able to pull this off.
Mind you, not a single shred of my worry is based in reality... it's all in my head. We still have outstanding invoices that should carry us through for at least a month or two, and we have some big news on the horizon (more on that later). The people in this town, as far as I can tell, are welcoming us with open arms. Our landlady is excellent. The shop is a dream. EVERYTHING IS PERFECT, AND YET I CAN'T SLEEP BECAUSE I AM PERPETUALLY SINKING IN THE SWAMPS OF TERROR.
It's kind of weird to be blogging about this, but this blog has always been kind of an unconventional one. It's like us. So I'm writing about this weird stage of the move.
I don't even know what to do first. So I just do one thing, and another thing, and hope that as long as I keep putting one foot in front of the other, I'll eventually approximate my regular gait.
So, that's the update. A bigger and more comprehensive update about the shop and our progress building it out is coming soon. In the mean time, I thought it might be fun to join me as we slip into the weird times.
